October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

This month, make pedestrian safety a practical priority by checking crossing locations, reviewing lighting, and preparing your team’s visibility equipment for evening use. Explore pedestrian safety statistics and practical ways to improve visibility at crossings and after dark.
According to NHTSA’s 2024 pedestrian safety report, published in June 2026, 7,080 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 71,635 were injured in U.S. traffic crashes. Of pedestrian fatalities, 76% occurred in darkness and 73% occurred at non-intersection locations. These national figures highlight important areas for safety planning.
Start with a visibility review during the hours your site operates. Check lighting, unobstructed signs, and pedestrian routes. NHTSA recommends using sidewalks and crossing at crosswalks or intersections. Remind drivers to slow down, watch for pedestrians, and yield at crossings through the use of visible signage. Test your team’s LED equipment and check batteries before each shift.
Using equipment like Stop-Lite's LED safety vests, LED hand-held paddles, and LED signage for traffic-control keeps pedestrian visibility part of a broader safety plan. Use National Pedestrian Safety Month to prepare your team for the months ahead.
