Fourth of July Safety: Why Visibility Matters More Than Ever

The Fourth of July is a very high‑risk holiday for anyone traveling by car, bike, or on foot. Between 2020 and 2024, 2,719 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes during Fourth of July holiday periods, and in 2024 alone, 579 people lost their lives on the roads (NHTSA, 2025). That makes Independence Day a critical focus for traffic safety and pedestrian safety at night.

Alcohol impairment is a major driver of this risk. Across the '20–'24 Fourth of July periods, 38% of all drivers killed had a BAC of 0.08% or higher. In 2024, 654 of the 1,724 drivers killed during the holiday period were alcohol‑impaired (NHTSA, 2025). Young adults are especially vulnerable: among drivers ages 21–34, 47% of those killed during Fourth of July holiday periods were alcohol‑impaired.

Compared with the rest of the year, the share of alcohol‑related fatalities rises from about 30% nationwide to 38–40% during the holiday. The National Safety Council estimates that

599 people died in preventable traffic crashes during the extended 2024 Independence Day travel period alone.

Nighttime conditions make these risks even more severe. Reduced visibility, visual clutter from fireworks and headlights, and distracted driving make it harder for motorists to see pedestrians, crossing guards, and traffic control personnel in time.

For agencies, schools, and event organizers, a data‑driven Fourth of July safety plan should prioritize nighttime visibility, high‑visibility clothing, and effective traffic control equipment. Tools like reflective apparel, LED‑enhanced vests, illuminated paddles, and cone lights can help drivers recognize hazards sooner and reduce the likelihood of serious or fatal crashes.
